Background of the sector or organization

Established in 2023 G.C., the Central Ethiopia Regional State Forest and Environment Protection Bureau were created to tackle the escalating problems of environmental pollution, climate change, and forest degradation. Recognizing that floods, landslides, droughts, and the rise of communicable and non communicable diseases are driven by human activities, the government mandated this bureau to legally administer the environment, determine land use, and restore degraded lands to their former productive state. Its core mission is to solve development bottlenecks related to forests, biodiversity, and environmental health. 

The bureau works to increase forest cover by protecting natural forests and carrying out new plantings. Through expanded forest development, it ensures that local communities directly benefit from forest resources, maintains the balance of ecological zones, and contributes to national economic growth. A key priority is building resilience against drought risks caused by climate change, thereby supporting food security and creating a clean, healthy, and comfortable environment for human well being. 

Under the leadership of the region’s Chief Administrator and in coordination with relevant bodies, the bureau addresses the recurring degradation of both natural and planted forests, rising environmental pollution, and good governance problems linked to illegal forest product use and trade. It focuses on reducing pollution (including waste management issues, global warming, and greenhouse effects) while cutting the root causes of environmental harm. By implementing policies and strategies properly, the bureau aims to reverse negative impacts on ecosystems and communities.

Taking advantage of organized people driven developmental army movements, fundamental work process re engineering, and change programs, the bureau strives to fulfill its responsibilities efficiently. It is committed to delivering fast, quality, and cost effective services to citizens at all levels. Through coordinated, integrated action – combining forest development, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation – the bureau works to ensure sustainable economic, social, and environmental growth for Central Ethiopia.
